Factors influencing the occurrence of hollow spears were investigated in containers, lysimeters and field studies in Germany, using cultivars Eposs, Gijnlim and Grolim. Temperature differences at different soil levels influenced hollow spears. A simulation model with an ambient temperature of 10 degrees C compared the effect of an underground temperature of 0 degrees C, with and without IR radiation in a day-night rhythm.
