Tests were conducted to determine the effect of various construction practices on the deflection characteristics of bookcases constructed of composites. There were 18 bookcases constructed and tested. Three cases each were constructed to: 1) determine the actual deflection of the front edge of a shelf as a function of the reinforcement of the back edge; 2) evaluate the contribution of attachment of an intermediate shelf to the side walls on bowing of the walls; and 3) investigate the effect of front frames on side wall deflection. The remaining six cases were used to investigate the effect of shelf to sidewall joint rigidity on shelf deflection at midspan. Results of the study showed that performance of existing designs can be improved by attaching the shelves to the back of a case with screws, by attaching the shelves to the case sides with rigid joints, and by increasing board thickness or increasing board MOE values. Also, outward bowing of case walls can be significantly reduced by attaching a front frame to the open front of a case.
