Antioxidant and antibacterial activities of Rosa damascena flower extracts.

Rosa damascena (damask rose) is 1 of the most important Rosa species in the flavour and fragrance industries. High amounts of residues of spent flowers remain after steam distillation. In this study, the potential use of essential oils from fresh and spent damask rose petals as natural antioxidants and antimicrobial agents was investigated. Total contents of phenolic compounds were 276.02 'b1 2.93 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g in fresh flower (FF) extract and 248.97 'b1 2.96 mg GAE/g in spent flower (SF) extract. 100 ppm of FF and SF extracts demonstrated 74.51 'b1 1.65 and 75.94 'b1 1.72% activities, respectively, against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals. The antioxidative activity of FF extract (372.26 'b1 0.96 mg/g) was higher than that of SF extract (351.36 'b1 0.84 mg/g). Antibacterial activity of the extracts was determined by the agar diffusion method against 15 species of bacteria, including Aeromonas hydrophila, Enterobacter aerogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli O157:H7, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Mycobacterium smegmatis, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, P. fluorescens, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus and Yersinia enterocolitica. Both extracts were effective against all the bacteria except E. coli O157:H7, although the FF extract was more effective than the SF extract. FF and SF extracts showed the strongest effects against Salmonella Enteritidis and M. smegmatis, respectively.
