摘要

Total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) is a treatment option for ankle arthritis. Many surgeons use TAA instead of arthrodesis. The first-generation TAA device had a two-component, constrained design that was abandoned because of high complication and failure rates. Development of second and third generation devices with minimally constrained designs and mobile polyethylene bearings have reduced complications and yielded good long-term results. However, the average complication rate is still 12.4%. Many authors have reported different types of complications, and among them, periprosthetic fracture is very rare. After an extensive literature search, we were only able to find five reported cases of periprosthetic fracture. Of these cases, four developed after using the Buechel-Pappas prosthesis in patients with inflammatory disease and one case developed after using an unknown implant in a patient who suffered direct trauma.
