Staged Total Ankle Arthroplasty Following Ilizarov Correction for Osteoarthritic Ankles with Complex Deformities: A Report of Three Cases

Total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) has emerged as another solution for end-stage ankle osteoarthritis. However, in cases with a complex deformed ankle, TAA is not recommended because it is limited in terms of its ability to correct complex deformities,12 despite the fact that TAA may preserve ankle motion and neighboring joints from overload and wear.Complex ankle deformity correction can be performed in an acute or gradual fashion. Acute correction has the drawbacks of limited correction, neurovascular damage, and soft tissue problems. Gradual correction with an Ilizarov method, which is based on the concept of distraction osteogenesis and histogenesis, is less limited by the magnitude of a deformity, and thus, is more useful for the correction of severe ankle deformities.
