Ertvelds—Oleon has started up a "first of its type worldwide" plant for the production of bio propylene glycol (PG) from glycerin using a process developed and licensed by BASF. The facility, located in Ertvelde, Belgium, is based on glycerin, obtained primarily from fats and oils generated as by-products of oleochemical production. BASF explained that its "highly sustainable production process" requires fewer production steps than the traditional hydrolysis from propylene oxide manufacturing technology.
