Quarterly Southern Pine Sawtimber Stumpage Prices in Louisiana Over the Lest 45 Years: Bugs, Owls, end Water

Selling timber at the right time is probably the best thing a forest landowner can do for himself. An examination of the quarterly southern pine stumpage prices over the last 45 years in Louisiana (Figure 1) would suggest that if the landowners had sold their sawtimber at the then all time highs of 1969, 1973, 1974, 1979, 1995, and 1998, their investment in forestry would have been very richly rewarded. But hindsight is always 20/20. How would the landowners know at the time that the stumpage price would not keep on rising and they were not selling their timber too soon? Indeed, would the stumpage price keep on rising in the future? And what is a good time to sell the timber anyway?
