Trial finds amiodarone treatment maintains sinus rhythm safely in persistent atrial fibrillation

Direct current cardioversion is commonly used to restore sinus rhythm in people with atrial fibrillation. However, relapse is high, at up to 75% at 1 year. Prophylactic anti-arrhythmic therapy with amiodarone may reduce the relapse rate, but there is a risk of non-cardiac toxicity. The appropriate duration of prophylactic anti-arrhythmic treatment remains uncertain.
