Cotton is the 'motor' of economic and social development in the farming zones of Southern Mali. Cotton production is rapidly increasing, as seen in the number of cotton farms, the area cultivated, and the fraction of agricultural revenue from cotton. This article uses the results of an agroeconomic survey in family farms in Mali, from 1994 through 2003. It describes the changes in cotton farms and analyses their ability to cope with the major decrease in cottonseed prices..
