The integration and the development of agroforestry systems into farming systems in the province of West-Kalimantan (Indonesia) brought about a progressive evolution of the social systems in keeping with technical systems and with no brutal breakdowns. The permanence of agroforestry practices over a long period in extensive agroforestry rubber systems (or jungle rubber) was supported by the maintenance of such a coherence between technical and social systems. The Dayak and Malayu populations set up land tenure and regulations (Adat, in Indonesian) according to their need for controlling their "territory" in order to facilitate agricultural production while allowing their social systems to be reproduced. Land use, customary law and labour use evolution seem to be relevant factors to study such coherence.
