Antimicrobial stewardship: the aspirin of the 21st Century.

'Evidenced-based' has become a mantra for the practice of medicine in the 21st Century. Diagnosis and therapy require precision and objectivity that only well-studied mechanisms can provide. That an intervention has been proven effective and cost efficient is unusual. Time-tested interventions that have withstood scrutiny and skepticism, and have also been proven effective and cost efficient, are indeed rare. Aspirin could be considered a gold standard for this elite group of interventions.
