Methanol prices have recently moved up sharply and unexpectedly as a result of planned and unplanned outages at the same time as recovering demand. Given the surplus of capacity and assuming most plants operate normally, prices should fall in Q1 2011. Over the longer term, however, very little new capacity is planned except in China, demand growth will outstrip capacity and there will be renewed pressure on prices.
