Ethylene, polyethylene demand up more than anticipated in 2010

Demand for ethylene improved more than CMAI expected this year, causing the consultant to move its estimates upwards for this year and the next, in its latest US Ethylene Supply/Demand outlook, based on actual data through Q2. CMAI forecasts total demand for all ethylene derivatives up 4.6% this year, compared with 0.8% in its previous outlook. For 2011 the consultant predicts a 1.4% increase, vs. 0.6% previously. Over the 2008-11 period demand is now expected to be up 8.9% instead of 3.8%. CMAI says that in general the rebound in demand from nearly all derivatives this year has been stronger than it expected.
