Effect of cultivar and rockwool as a root medium on yielding of cherry tomato

In the years 2000 and 2001 research on cherry tomato grown on rockwool in the greenhouse was carried out. Eight cultivars: 'Conchita F_1', 'DRC 1021 F_1', 'Evita F_1', 'Favorita F_1', 'Flavorino F_1', 'Goldita F_1', and 'Picolino F_1' from De RuiterSeeds (Holland), and 'Piko F_1' from SHR Krzcszowice (Poland) were studied. As growing substrates rockwool Agroban (Slovakia) and Flormin (Poland) were used. The aim of the research was to determine the size and quality of yield of the cherry tomato grown on rockwool. The results indicated the full usefulness of rockwool as a substrate for cherry tomato cultivation. The 1st grade yields of the studied cultivars differed, but the kind of rockwool did not affect the yield differentiation. With respect toyielding and yield growth rate the highest note was given to 'DRC-1021 F_1'. The highest 1st grade yield (16.5 kg m~(-2)) was also given by 'DRC-1021 F_1', while the lowest by 'Piko F_1' (8.8 kg m~(-2)). The greatest number of clusters was noted on a plant of 'Goldita F_1' (15.2 kg) and the smallest on 'Flavorino F_1' (12.4 kg). 'Piko F_1' had the greatest number of fruits in a cluster (21.5 kg) but these fruits were the lightest.
