THE Fez is a curious piece of couture. Along with the crushed velvet smoking jacket and the hand rolled cheroot, I'm desperately disappointed that they haven't become part of popular culture in the Western world. Stylish, extremely comfortable and, ifworn with tassel akimbo, gives the wearer a distinct air of dapper authority - possibly why the soft black felt version was popularised by the Italian Blackshirts during the Mussolini Fascist period, and even more surprising that it's not worn by more of the quirky restaurant critic types around town.
