Group I consisted of 28 patients with intra-articular calcaneus fractures who had been treated with open reduction using an extended lateral approach. Internal fixation was achieved with a calcaneus plate. The mean age of those in Group I was 39.1 years (range, 23-58), and 24 were male.Group II consisted of 55 patients with 59 displaced intra-articular calcaneus fractures. All had fractures with an intra-articular step-off of more than 1 mm, and all had been treated with open reduction through an extensile lateral approach and internal fixation. The mean age of these patients was 45.1 years (range, 29-59). Fractures in Group II included three 3-part/1-joint, 16 4-part/2-joint, 28 5-part/2-joint, and 12 5-part/3-joint.
