Tibiotalocalccmeal arthrodesis with a compressive retrograde intramedullary nail: A report of 34 consecutive patients
To evaluate the effectiveness of using a compressive retrograde intramedullary nail for tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis. Compressive retrograde intramedullary nails were used to achieve fixation in 34 consecutive patients treated with tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis at the Oulu University Hospital, Oulu, Finland. The mean age of the patients was 57 years (range, 25-77), all were ambulatory, and none had severe vascular disease. Indications for arthrodesis included rheumatoid arthritis in 10, post-traumatic arthrosis in 10, severe clubfoot in 6, primary arthrosis in 4, secondary arthrosis in 2, Charcot arthropathy in 1, and 1 had an ankle crush injury. Twenty-two of the patients had a total of 41 prior surgeries on the affected foot.
