Treatment of Jones Fracture Nonunions and Refractures in the Elite Athlete: Outcomes of Intramedullary Screw Fixation with Bone Grafting

A retrospective review was conducted of the records of 21 consecutive elite (Professional, National Collegiate Athletic Association, or Olympic) athletes treated surgically for a refracture or a nonunion of a Jones fracture (fracture of the fifth metatarsal distal to the tuberosity but proximal to the diaphysis). All patients were treated between April 2003 and March 2010, the mean age of the patients was 28 years (range, 15 to 50), and 16 were male. Initially 16 of the patients had been treated with surgical fixation and five had been treated with cast immobilization and non-weight-bearing.
