Salvage Arthrodesis for Failed Total Ankle Arthroplasty: Clinical Outcome and Influence of Method of Fixation on Union Rates in 18 Ankles Followed for 3-12 Years

A retrospective review was conducted of the records of 18 patients who were treated for failed total ankle arthroplasty between 1994 and 2005. The mean age of the patients at the time of arthroplasty was 55 years (range, 27-76) and 14 were female. Initial diagnosis included 13 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 3 with osteoarthritis, one 27-year-old female with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and one with non-specific oligoarthritis. Six of the ankles had been treated with New Jersey low contact stress prosthesis, 11 had been treated with Buechel-Pappas prosthesis, and one had been treated with a ceramic-coated implant. The most common causes of failure were loosening in 5 cases and deformity in 4 cases. The mean time from arthroplasty to arthrodesis was 4 years (range, 0.2-13).
