Endometriosis--a European perspective.

Special sessions on endometriosis were organized and held by the Endometriosis Research Founda tion, the European Endometriosis League, and the European Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology German-French language at various meetings in Monaco in collaboration With Gynactions. Out of this a number of manuscripts have been developed and are compiled in this issue. Even so, basic clear descriptions of the disease endometriosis date back to the middle of the 19th century [1], etiology and prevalence of the disease are still under debate. Without any doubt endometriosis as well as adeno-myosis - different manifestations of the same disease process [2] - play a major clinical role in gynecology because of still existing difficulties to diagnose the disease (Worldwide delay of diagnosis up to 12 years) [1] and the extensive impact on women's well being caused by pain and fertility problems.
