International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) 2014: Meeting report

The 15th Biennial Meeting of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS 2014) was held in Melbourne, Australia, November 8-11. Approximately 1900 health care professionals from 80 countries attended. Over 1300 abstracts were discussed, including 55 oral presentations, covering basic/translational science, breast cancer, cervical cancer, imaging/staging, uterine cancer including sarcoma, and vulvar/ vaginal cancer and ovarian cancer research. In addition, several sessions were devoted to Phase I/II multi-site clinical trials, surgical techniques, and symptom management/palliation. The 2014 meeting, organized by Program Chair, Andreas Obermair of Queensland, Australia and IGCS President, Lynette Denny of Cape Town South Africa, featured a special focus on surgical techniques, with presentations of live surgical procedures and multidisciplinary discussions of surgical complications arising from complex surgical procedures in advanced gynecological malignancies. A further focus was the early detection and screening of women with gynecological cancer with special emphasis on the identification of predictive biomarkers for surgical outcome and overall survival. Herein, we highlight and summarize important discoveries from the meeting.
