FDA food compliance chief warns of further enforcement uptick

Expect an uptick in enforcement actions to continue this year as top FDA officials are issuing more targeted directions to field staff to inspect a list of risky plants, such as companies involved in past Class I recalls for allergen labeling and facilities that handle tree nuts, Roberta Wagner, director of the FDA food division's Office of Compliance, warned last week at a meeting in Washington, D.C.Speaking Oct. 13 to 100 people attending the Food and Drug Law Institute's Enforcement and Litigation Conference: Enforcement in a Post-Wyeth, New Administration World, Wagner said FDA also is targeting inspections of food warehouses and fresh produce firms. The agency also plans to conduct an inspection blitz to check nutrition and health claim labels on food products.
