Where is endothelial keratoplasty going: From Descemet stripping (automated) endothelial keratoplasty to Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty to Descemet membrane endothelial transfer? [Où devrait se diriger la kératoplastie endothéliale: de la DSAEK à la DMEK au DMET?]

Since 1998, lamellar keratoplasties have become an increasingly favoured treatment option for corneal disorders and are often preferred to traditional penetrating keratoplasties.1 As shown in the analysis by Lichtinger et al. in this issue of Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, a similar trend was observed in Toronto Western Hospital, having shifted from performing penetrating keratoplasties in 100% of cases 10 years ago to performing them in only 40% of cases currently. The benefits of posterior lamellar keratoplasty, including elimination of suture-related complications, more predictable refractive outcomes, shorter recovery times, and better visual outcomes, have been well described in previous literature.
