EWG asks FDA to halt plastic pallets

Richard Wiles, senior vice president for policy and communications at the Environmental Working Group, has urged FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg to order the food industry to stop using plastic pallets containing decabromodiphenyl ether (Deca). Animal studies have linked Deca to various adverse health effects.In a June 24 letter to Hamburg, Wiles says studies "strongly suggest" the flame retardant chemical leaches from pallets during the food industry's standard practice of hydro-cooling, in which produce stacked on pallets is submerged in water, or water is dripped over stacked pallets.
