Argentina's grain producers and processors claim their livelihood is threatened by a recent state court ruling restricting application of glyphosate herbicide, and by a petition before the Supreme Court for a 180-day nationwide ban on its use.Glyphosate opponents scored a state level court victory when a Santa Fe tribunal banned glyphosate application in the vicinity of populated areas, in response to allegations that the herbicide contributes to public health problems. Farmers fear that the ruling will make land in the vicinity of all inhabited areas in the state off limits to glyphosate, making it impossible to recover their investment in new glyphosate-tolerant biotech corn and soybean varieties.
