Mande named 'deputy' under secretary for food safety at USDA

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack has yet to name his new under secretary for food safety, but last week he revealed that Jerold Mande will be the agency's next "deputy" under secretary for food safety.It's been 10 months since Richard Raymond stepped down as the under secretary for food safety at USDA (see FCN Sept. 29, Page 28). Complicating the naming of his replacement, according to sources, is the Obama administration's desire to fill cabinet posts with individuals without a history of lobbying. Though, at press time, the USDA declined to comment on such reports.But Mande is no stranger to Washington, D.C., or food safety.
