FDA begins scrutinizing allergy advisory labels on food packages

FDA has taken its first step in its investigation of how the food industry uses labels that advise consumers of inadvertent allergens, such as peanuts, that may slip into a product during processing. At a Sept. 16 meeting in College Park, Md., the agency heard from the food industry, international regulators and a consumer group on ways to render allergy advisory labels more clear and consistent to help alleviate confusion in the marketplace for people who suffer from food allergies.
