This article examines the operating characteristics and service areas of 42 food recovery organizations and their subsidiary distributing organizations in the Mid-Atlantic states of the USA. Data were collected from food recovery organizations on their geographic service areas; quantity and type of commodity supplies and distributions over the 1994-7 period; sources and recipients and food donations; and non-food resources. The results are discussed under the following headings: food recovery organization distributions are growing; the food industry is the major source of food donations, but more is available, donations from fresh produce wholesalers have risen dramatically, and urban food donations per poor person exceed rural donations.
