Processed food trade surplus narrowed in 1997.

An investigation into the US processed food trade surplus in 1997 is presented. Exports and imports of processed foods, beverages and related products are examined. The continuous trade surpluses enjoyed by the sector since 1992 may be jeopardized in 1998 by the negative impact of the Asian crisis, the robust US economy and the strong dollar. During 1997 growth in processed food exports increased, with 23 processed food industries achieving record sales. Japan continued to be the largest export market for US processed foods, although its share of US exports did fall. Exports to Canada and Mexico in particular demonstrated strong growth.
