USDA proposes overhaul of 'animal raising' label claims

USDA wants to change its troubled process for reviewing "animal raising" claims on meat and poultry labels, the agency revealed in an Gct 10 Federal Register notice and in a public meeting last week for interested parties. At the Gct 14 meeting at a downtown hotel in Washington, D.C., USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service acknowledged difficulties with the current system, including problematic "free range" claims on poultry products, the recent legal battle over Tyson Foods' "raised without antibiotics" claims (see FCN June 30, Page 32), and imperfect coordination with its sister agency, USDA'sAgricultural Marketing Service (AMS).
