National Organic Standards Board votes aquaculture recommendations

USDA's National Organic Standards Board has approved controversial fish feed and net pen recommendations for organic aquaculture standards. Ending a three-day meeting at a hotel in Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown neighborhood Wednesday, the IS-member NOSB, by majority vote, took actions that several consumer advocacy groups strongly opposed. The board approved a 12-year, phased-in approach to feeding farmed fish organic feed instead of ordering an immediate switch and approved the use of open net pens. The recommendations now will go to VSDA's National Organic Program for review and implementation.
