UK shoppers prefer labels with traffic lights, GDAs and text

British shoppers want a front-of-pack label that combines traffic light colors, the words "high," "medium" and "low," and Guideline Daily Amounts (GDAs), according to independent research commissioned by the UK Food Standards Agency and published last week.They also favor a label combining text with traffic light colors.Both types of label scored roughly 70% in terms of consumer comprehension, but the evidence suggests shoppers prefer the GDA-traffic light combination. "It is one of the best liked labels and enables consumers to use the information in their preferred format," says the report from the Project Management Panel. Inclusion of percentage GDAs enables shoppers to determine the individual level of nutrients, the report says.
