Western Australian premier calls for halt to GM food approvals

The head of one of Australia's six states wants the nation's food regulatory agency to stop approving genetically modified (GM) foods until more is known about their safety. Western Australian Premier Alan Carpenter says he is concerned that Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has not called for independent scientific trials of GM foods, accepting instead the data supplied by GM food manufacturers. He also wants better enforcement of GM-related labeling rules.
