In a decision broadly affecting field trials of bioengineered crops, a federal district judge ruled Feb. 5 that VSDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service must subject all new field trials to more rigorous environmental reviews. Citing potential threats to the environment, V.S. Judge Harold Kennedy of the District of Columbia found in favor of the Center for Food Safety by concluding that APHIS's past approvals of field trials of herbicide tolerant bentgrass were illegal.
