The global food industry today is faced with many complex and interrelated drivers which can be summarized as Consumer "Megatrends" and "Meagashocks". This paper discusses the importance of food and nutritional sciences and the need for collaborative approach in meeting these global challenges in the Australian context. It describes how population pressure changes food dynamics, and some food safety and security challenges; addresses the need for re-investment in food and agriculture research; and presents the cost of nutrition-related diseases. It also cites the potential of advances in genetics for the improvement of health and reduction of disease, and suggests possible food and nutrition national research priorities.
