The key aspects of the iron ore production process are: 12.1. Open Pit Mining - Drilling, Blasting, Excavation and Mine Haulage Almost all iron ore in the western countries is mined by open-pit methods. Overburden is stripped by bulldozers, scrapers and shovels and stored for future use in rehabilitating mining areas. Blasting is normally required and mining proceeds along successive benches as pits become progressively deeper. The blasted iron ore and waste rock are handled by front-end loaders or large diesel-electric rope or hydraulic shovels. Mine haulage is by large diesel-mechanical or diesel-electric trucks and/or conveyors to a crushing plant. Some operations load iron ore directly to railcars for movement to the crusher.
