摘要

ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION of Home Builders' report, "I lousing Facts, Figures and Trends 2004," the average American home size has increased by nearly 50 percent over the last several decades, from 1,500 square feet in 1970 to 2.230 square feet in 2002, the last year for which statistics are available. Interior designer Christopher Coleman, of Christopher Coleman Interior Design in Brooklyn, N.Y., suspects one reason Americans are building massive homes is that we, as the largest and richest consumer market in the world, have much more "stuff than ever before, and we need places to put it all. In addition, in response to having our homes filled with "stuff." Americans are now seeking simple, uncluttered environments, and as homes have grown substantially larger, we have the space to hide our belongings and have clean, peaceful home designs.
