US dietary guidelines: research and policy needs in the nutrition, health and agricultural sectors.

This special issues comprises 14 papers examining the forces that shape US food and nutrition policies. The papers are divided between five sections covering: economics of nutrition and health; issues related to production agriculture in the USA; issues relating to food processing and the marketing system in the USA; the consumer's role; and implications for public policy. A commentary concludes each section. The focus is on the economics of nutrition related health, the significance of greater compliance with dietary guidelines to production agriculture, marketing and processing, the consumer's role in the food system, and implications of these factors for public policy.
