Meet Your Meat: The Argument for Increasing Education and Public Outreach Regarding the Regulation and Safety of Animal Biotechnology

The duo—both professors of genomics— state that the so-called "Franken-fish" has been subjected to one of the longest regulatory assessments in FDA history. Despite the fact that AquAdvantage is undeniably among the most regulated products in the history of the American marketplace, the American public continues to fret over the safety of the product.The Food and Drug Administration and the United States government should be strengthening efforts to provide the public with transparent information regarding why it feels animal biotechnology is safe for the American dinner plate, in the event FDA doeschoose to give the product final approval. Doing so may help to alleviate concerns over transgenic animals, especially in light of the fact that public misinformation has had a detrimental effect on the regulatory process and, as a consequence, profoundimpact on an intellectual property market that finds itself firmly rooted in the biotechnology industry.
