To understand the reason for Benson Group to commit totally to low migration UV ink production at its main plant in Leicester, one has to set the scene by defining what is meant by ink migration. There are four kinds of migration — penetration through a porous material; set-off in the stack; vapour phase transfer; and distillation. Simply put, migration occurs when one substance transfers itself to another. The problem is complicated further by the fact that it is not always detectable by a change in the organoleptic properties — that is its smell, colour, taste and touch are unchanged. It can be detected only by a series of highly sensitive analytical tests carried out under strict laboratory conditions using spectroscopy or chromatography equipment.
