Current Standards far Certification of Fire-Resistant Hydraulic Fluids Used in General Industrial Applications

Fire is a major hazard in many hydraulic industrial applications requiring the use of approved fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. In the United States the earliest standards for evaluation and certification of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids originated in the 1950's for military aircraft soon followed by standards for the civil aircraft and turbine industries. In Europe, publication of the first standard was in 1961 for the mining industry triggered by the coal mining disaster which occurred at Marcinelle, Belgium in 1956 where 267 miners died from an underground fire. Today the need for test methods that are reproducible and accurately discriminate the level of fire-resistance between commercial fire-resistant hydraulic fluids is greater than ever. The most widely recognized standards in the world are the Luxembourg Report [1] and the FM Approval Standard 6930 [2-3]. The FM Approval standard evaluates only the fire-resistance of the hydraulic fluid while the Luxembourg Report evaluates all aspects of hydraulic fluid performance. Both standards now include spray heat release tests introduced by the European Economic Community in the 7th Luxembourg Report and by FM Global in the Approval Standard CN 6930 published in January 2002.
