Among the global orchid young plant suppliers, Sion Young Plants has risen to a third position. With annual sales of 22 million Phalaenopsis young plants, it currently lies just after market leaders Anthura and Flori-cultura. Not bad for a newcomer tothe young plant business scene. "A relative newcomer," stresses Sion's managing director and company owner Eric Moor, "when it comes to Sion's production facility for Phalaenopsis, 70% of the assortment comes from own breeding. Right from the beginning,we set up our own breeding programme and were thus automatically gaining experience with propagating, Moreover, in 1993, there were only 10 to 15 professional orchid growers in the Netherlands while today more than 100 orchid growers are fiercely competing with each other. The major question we asked ourselves is: Do we want to continue by trying to do it better or differently or could we try out something new?
