Orchids are big business. Americans buy more than 15 million plants each year while the Japanese and Europeans buy more than 10 million and 5 million, respectively. The Taiwanese butterfly orchid is blossoming beautifully and spreading its wings to conquer the world's 1.5 billion EUR orchid industry. Attracted by the good profit margins, Yu Pin Biological Technology kicked off construction of its 11.5 ha of automated greenhouses in 1993. Today's company is headquartered in Minxuong Town, Chiayi county, but it also has 5 ha of state-of-the-art greenhouses in New York, Chicago and Miami for the production of flowering plants, explains Yu Pin director Chang Ncng Yi.
