According to the Directorate General of Customs, the Country's 2010 orchid export amount increased by 35.98% from 2009, with the Phalaenopsis exports gaining 31.7% (see Figure 1). In its annual statistical report, the Council of Agriculture indicatedthat Taiwan's flower output totaled US$ 442,800,000 in 2010, with orchids accounting for 4.89% of the Country's total flower-growing area (see Figure 2) and registering an output of US$ 108,463,000 (excluding cut flowers), which is 24.49% of the industry's total and larger than any other flower product1 (see Figure 3). Also, orchids contribute 78% of Taiwan's flower export amount (see Figure 4), or US$ 116,560,000. Among all exported orchid varieties, Phalaenopsis is a flagship product that accounts for a portion as large as 71%, or US$ 82,550,000 (see Figure 5). The statistics give us a sense of how important Phalaenopsis is in Taiwan's flower exports sector.
