Photo guide to plug deficiencies: our detailed photo pictorial shows you symptoms of three nutritional deficiencies in five different annual crops

At North Carolina State University, we've developed the following photo series showing deficiency symptoms of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium for five plug crops. The crops included begonia Prelude Mix, impatiens Hybrid White, marigold Discovery Orange, pansy Regal Mix, and petunia Primetime White. Plants were grown in 288-cell plug trays in a medium consisting of three parts sphagnum peat moss to one part perlite. We created the various deficiencies by omitting the nutrient we were studying from the preplant and postplant fertilization program.
