Located in the southwest corner of China, Yunnan province is home to more than 50% of China's cut flower production. Growers in the region benefit from strong government support because horticulture represents a growing export opportunity for the country. Besides investing in education, propagation materials and production facilities, in 2002 the Chinese government built the Kunming International Flower Auction (KIFA) outside of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan. Spanning 2.8 ha and using two clocks, KIFA organizers were frequent visitors to the Aalsmeer Flower Auction (VBA) in the Netherlands to learn how best to develop the new organization. Because of its support of KIFA in this beginning stage, the Chinese government granted the VBA a 5% share in the new auction.
