NeoCon, I realized upon reflecting on my 18 years with Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. (MMPI), hasn't evolved due to but rather with the Green Movement. It has been apparent that the industry embraced the ideals of conservation and green design for decades. "Going Green'" has deep roots, and has consistendy been a core element of design for these innovators. Milliken began reusing packing materials in 1900, HON initiated lean manufacturing practices in 1947, while in 1960 Steelcase recycled spent solvents and Milliken mandated that the company reduce their imprint on the environment. All of these eco-responsible measures were put in place long before the EPA was even created in 1970, when gasoline was 36 cents per gallon, terms like "carbon footprint," "global warming," "greenhouse effect" were not yet part of our lexicon. As has repeatedly been the case, the contract furnishings industry was ahead of the curve.
