Danish industry survives fleet cuts

Massive cuts have reduced the Danish fleet by more than half. There seems to be almost a ban on new ship building and related industries are moving to the Baltic States or closing. Up to 1000 fishermen have even found jobs in the new windmill industry! That's the bad news. Yet, Denmark's industrial fishery has just had one of its better years. Also, young Danes are still entering fishing education programs and Danish trawls and gear are being fished around the globe. Velo Mitrovich reports. The last18 months have seen nearly 120 Danish fishing vessels being decommissioned to bring the total since 1987 up to nearly 1300 vessels. This figure isn't enough for Niels Wichmann, managing director of ihc Danish Fishermen's Association.
