Bumper capelin season boosts Icelandic meal

Icelandic fishmeal producers are looking back on a highly successful and lucrative 2001/02 capelin season. The country's upgraded fishing fleet boosted fishmeal production at a time when the main South American catching countries of Chile and Peru have been struggling. The season began in July last year, although the bulk of fishing look place through the winter from January onwards. According to Icelandic figures, this has been the second best capelin season on record with 1,046,000 tonnes landed.
