Scientists and fishermen combin to produce: catch forecasts for groundfish

Forecasts of cod and haddock catches on fishing grounds in the Gulf of Maine/Georges Bank are being provided using satellite-derived information in a co-opcralion between fishermen and scientists. 'Live' data being supplied by fishermen working 20 trawlers has been electronically combined with complex fish and experimental models to produce prototype maps in near-real time of fish abundance, reports ICESCIEM, the newsletter of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
